Viabundus. Digital Atlas of pre-modern roads in Nothern Europe

The project „Pre-modern long-distance trading roads and regional road network“ at the Institut für Historische Landesforschung  at the University of Göttingen aims for a reconstruction of high to late medieval long-distance roads, which will be made available within a digital map. Not only will the map and the responding database visualise historical circumstances, but they also  provide  an analytic tool with which further questions of historical economics, communication and traffic can be addressed. The map will be open to the public by 2021 under the name “Viabundus – Map of premodern European transport and mobility“.

The sub-project in Magdeburg at the chair for medieval history at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg will identify and specify medieval traffic connections in the area of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt according to the atlas of Hanseatic Traffic Roads by Friedrich Bruns and Hugo Weczerka. The area encompasses about 400 nodes, which will be added to the database with according features of infrastructure.

The international workshop on October 2nd 2019 in Göttingen was the opening event for the sub-project in Magdeburg. Essential discussions on the project and introductions to the use of the database and digital mapping enabled a smooth start. The whole project will further be presented in upcoming conferences, such as the Deutscher Historikertag.

The sub-project in Magdeburg is funded by the Friedrich-Christian-Lesser-Foundation.
